In 2011, Charles Osuji uprooted himself and his developing legal career, moving from Nigeria to Calgary, Alberta. As an internationally trained lawyer, he faced daunting challenges that many in his position understand all too well.
Re-accreditation processes, building a professional network from scratch, and finding opportunities to prove his worth in a new legal system—these obstacles were formidable but not insurmountable.
Through determination and hard work, Charles not only overcame these challenges but built a thriving career. His experience became the foundation upon which FIDI was established—a program dedicated to helping others navigate the same path more smoothly.
Today, FIDI stands as a testament to the power of lived experience combined with a commitment to lifting others up.

FIDI offers a unique opportunity for internationally trained lawyers to gain practical skills and knowledge in the practice of law in Alberta, Canada.
Client Consultations
Participants assist in drafting A key component involves attending consultations with clients. During these sessions, participants take detailed notes and create records, gaining insight into the intricacies of client interactions.
Client Meetings & Court Proceedings
FIDI participants accompany lawyers from Osuji & Smith in client meetings, negotiations, and court hearings, providing invaluable real-world experience.
Document Drafting:
Participants assist in drafting legal documents, court documents, pleadings, and letters essential skills for any practicing lawyer.
Active Engagement
Participants are not mere observers they actively engage in all aspects of legal practice, developing the skills necessary for a successful career in the Canadian legal system.
